Rooted in Christ: Rediscovering Your Identity

We live in a world that places tremendous value on identity. Everywhere we turn, it seems to be the defining conversation—who we are, what we do, and how we’re perceived. But have we overemphasized the importance of identity? No, I don’t believe so. The problem isn’t in valuing identity; it’s in where we place that value. Too often, we stake our identity in fleeting things—our careers, relationships, or even our passions. But none of these were ever meant to carry the full weight of who we are.

As mothers, the all-consuming nature of our role can feel overwhelming. It demands everything—emotionally, physically, and mentally. Every part of us is called to sacrifice and adapt. So, how do we discover our identity outside of motherhood? Because let’s be clear: motherhood, while beautiful and sacred, is not our ultimate calling as women.

Yet, the answer isn’t found in simply chasing a career, a relationship, or a passion apart from our children. What happens when that job is taken away, that relationship ends, or those passions fade? If our identity is rooted in temporary things, we’ll always find ourselves grappling with loss and uncertainty.

The only unshakable foundation for our identity is in Christ. He is the answer. Scripture assures us that true joy, hope, and fulfillment are found in Him alone. Every good and perfect thing flows from Him. How could entrusting our entire selves to the One who never changes, never wavers, and never stops loving us be wrong?

When we place our identity in Christ, we anchor ourselves in an unchanging truth. From that place of security, every other role we hold flows with purpose. As a wife, sister, friend, teacher, athlete, CEO, or mother, our identity in Him shapes who we are and how we live. Only through Him can we experience true peace, hope, and joy.

So take your identity—the sum of who you are—and place it in His hands. You’ll discover a strength and clarity that no temporary title or role could ever provide.

With love and laughter,

Piper
