Faith Through the Mess: Trusting God in Motherhood’s Hardest Moments

As I write this, I’m sitting in my rocking chair after a twelve-hour throw-up session with my one-year-old son. No real reason—he’s happy as a clam now—just a weird stomach bug.

Last night was hard. Watching him try to settle, all I wanted to do was snuggle the sicky feelings away, to make him feel better. It’s one of the hardest parts of motherhood: seeing your little one feel yucky, especially when they don’t understand what’s going on.

I did everything I could think of—helping him sip water, eat crackers, go for walks in the fresh air, and take naps. And still, the sickness ran its course.

In the middle of it all, a thought hit me: This is motherhood. You do your best, and sometimes, that still doesn’t fix the problem.

Some things are just beyond our control. The toughest tantrum, the nastiest infection, or even the everyday overwhelm we feel can’t always be solved by sheer effort. But you know what can make a difference? Being present.

Sometimes being present looks like holding them close for a snuggle session. Other times it’s stepping outside for a breath of fresh air or simply sitting with them in their sadness. And often, it’s realizing that all we can do is pray—lifting up our children to the One who loves them even more than we do.

As hard as it is to admit, you are not enough for your child—and that’s okay. You were never meant to be their everything. They have a God who knows them better than you ever will, who loves them more deeply than you can imagine.

This truth isn’t just freeing—it’s empowering. When you acknowledge that you can’t control every outcome, you’re freed to focus on what you can do: steward your child’s life with love, care, and faith. It’s a privilege to nurse them through their sickness, to teach and train them, and to raise them in the light of God’s grace. But at the end of the day, the best thing you can do is entrust them to Him.

So, Mama, when you’re in the trenches of sleepless nights, tantrums, or moments of complete overwhelm, remember this: God is faithful, even in the mess. He’s not asking you to be perfect. He’s asking you to trust Him—to lean on Him when you feel like you can’t go on.

And just as He’s cared for you through every storm, He’s caring for your little ones, too. You’re not in this alone.

Take heart, and let God meet you in the mess.

With love and laughter,

Piper
