Embracing the Unplanned: Finding Peace in Life’s Chaos

Something I’m struggling with lately is finding a “balance” (what a joke of a concept) between accomplishing goals, setting a schedule, and recognizing that, in this season of life, schedules exist to be ruined and goals are set to be forgotten and overlooked.
I think God is calling me into something I’m continually unfamiliar with: not giving up or throwing out the playbook just because things don’t go as planned.
Take today, for example—I’m feeling so accomplished! I’m sitting here with some decaf, reflecting on a day that included a trip to the park with my son and dog, lots of play and joyful giggles, full tummies, and two whole naps! I even made time for my Bible study homework, wrote down some goals for the next little bit, and now, I’m writing this blog post.
But I also know my son could wake up at any moment, it could start raining, or I could get hit with a serious wave of pregnancy sleepiness that I cannot indulge because there’s too much to do!
And yet, I’m learning to embrace the beauty of simply enjoying this moment—just this one—without being consumed by the million other moments that might not go as planned.
Something that’s been helping me (and that I’d encourage anyone to try) is setting wide goals for each day—something broad enough to be fulfilled in a variety of ways. For me, that looks like:
• Time with God
• Connection with my husband
• Moving with my son
• Rest for myself (and Baby #2)
Each of these will look different every day—and isn’t that a wonderful thing?
So leave room for mistakes, changes, and God’s surprises. You won’t be disappointed.

With love and laughter,
Piper
